A hallmark of the herpes family of viruses is their ability to cause recurrent disease. A dynamic cross talk appears to occur between the HSV-1 latency-associated transcript (LAT), the only viral gene that is abundantly transcribed during latency, and the CD8(+)T cells that reside in HSV-1 latently infected human and rabbit trigeminal ganglia (TG). In the case of Varicella Zoster, there is one main outbreak (chickenpox) and then recurrent outbreaks are usually milder and known as shingles. Some herbs which are beneficial to the immune system are Echinacea (not for herpes), Siberian Ginseng, Garlic, Usnea, Elderberry, Astragalus, and Oregon Grape just to name a few. Essential oils are also pivotal in maintaining a beneficial environment, which is free from disease. Compared to CD8(+)T cells from LAT(-)TG, CD8(+)T cells from LAT(+)TG (i) recognized a broader selection of nonoverlapping HSV-1 epitopes, (ii) expressed higher levels of PD-1, TIM-3, and CTLA-4 markers of exhaustion, and (iii) produced less tumor necrosis factor alpha, gamma interferon, and granzyme B. Physical factors like trauma from an outside source–if the area you usually outbreak gets hit, sun or wind damaged–may also trigger an outbreak.
All vitamins and minerals are essential to good health. Without the proper nutrients the body becomes depleted and the immune system becomes compromised. Environmental pollutants, radiation, chemicals, etc produce free radicals. Watch it–most non-herpes bumps (nicks, pimples, etc.) should disappear in a under a week, if a bump appears that does not, see a doctor. The body can deal with some free radicals, however, when they become excessive and there are no antioxidants present, damage to cells can occur. Antioxidants donate an electron to the free radical or unstable molecule. Vitamins C and E are important antioxidants that help keep the immune system in check.
Women are more likely to have herpes as it is easier for men to spread herpes. If the body is deficient in selenium antibody response is lowered. It is important to understand that vitamins and minerals work synergistically together and one without the other is of very little benefit. It is important to supplement the body when diet is lacking and when under additional emotional or physical stress. Before and after an outbreak your skin may be more likely to shed herpes cells, increasing your chances of transmitting through touch. Keep in mind that a healthy psychological balance is also crucial in supporting immune function. It is important to have strong relationships as well as a positive attitude.
